A CARVED-WOLF has been stolen from its habitat in the centre of Kendal.
The wooden wolf, carved by sculptor Andy Levy, is a representation of the long forgotten Hellsfell wolf and it was taken on the evening of Tuesday November 13.
Kendal Conservation Volunteers had been trialling a horticultural project as a way to raise awareness and to celebrate Kendal's green history.
Historically, the town was a woodland with native bulbs and ferns. The project's aim was to re-create this to a degree by trial planting native vegetation in a small space.
Three planters were placed in key locations in the town centre, exposing them to different conditions to ascertain whether they will survive.
The wooden wolf, known as the first planter, was situated near the Parish Church and it was acting as a centre piece for the project. It is also acting as a reminder of the Hellsfell wolf whose remains were found in the 1880's on Hellsfell, which overlooks the town.
Kendal Town Council is appealing to the public for any information relating to the incident.
A council spokesman said: "We hope for its safe return as without the wolf the project has no relevance."
