IF YOU are looking for seasonal inspiration, you’ll find it at Cumbria Life Christmas at Rheged, near Penrith, this weekend.

Now in its second year, the two-day-event on Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, November 18 showcases the best in Cumbrian gifts, food and drink, and art and crafts.

A festive market place with more than 50 exhibitors from across Cumbria and beyond will be complemented by a programme of expert-led talks and workshops.

“We had a very successful first event in 2017, with more than 1,600 visitors inspired by the diverse range of independent businesses, creatives and makers,” said Alistair Urquhart, general manager at Rheged. “We have developed the quality and variety of the programme even further this year from gift wrapping hacks and garland making to edible gift ideas with award-winning chef, Ryan Blackburn.”

The talk by Ryan, chef patron of the Old Stamp House restaurant and the newly-opened Kysty in Ambleside, is part of a packed programme of talks in the lecture theatre throughout the weekend. There’s also a cocktail making demonstration with Helen Askew of the Tipsy Filly, seasonal styling with Gail Bashall of Adlib women’s fashion in Penrith, and wines for Christmas with Richard Bracken from Grapevine on Saturday, and Sam Jary of Black Hand Wine on Sunday. All talks are included in the £5 entrance ticket to the show (under 16s are free).

In addition to the talks programme,Experts will also be leading small, specialist workshops where you can learn a new craft or skill. This year’s programme includes everything from calligraphy, embroidery and block printing sessions to making truffles, willow wreaths and unique decorations. The hands-on workshops are charged separately and each one is individually priced. Advanced booking is advisable due to limited places.

“We hope to build on the festive atmosphere with live music throughout the weekend and look forward to welcoming visitors with a glass of fizz on arrival to launch the start of Christmas,” added Alistair.
