A £20,000 pot of money could be made available as part of plans to prevent homes in Grange-over-Sands being flooded at Christmas.

The Windermere Road area has been plagued by flooding for years and last month residents reached their wits’ end when homes were breached during Storm Callum – the third big storm of 2018.

Some families had just returned to their renovated properties after the devastation caused by Storm Desmond in December, 2015.

A report will go before a county council committee on Monday, when South Lakeland councillors will be asked to agree a £20,000 package of intervention works – but the clock is ticking.

The county council has warned that long-range weather forecasts have suggested a spell of ‘significant’ wet weather is due in the run-up to the festive period, so it wants to put in place some quick fixes for Windermere Road.

Officers said in a report: “The strain on people affected is significant and the clean-up operations are becoming increasingly difficult.

“Our flood and highways teams have been working to assess what interventions can be put in place to alleviate future flooding in this particular area.

“Together with our partners, the Environment Agency and SLDC, we believe a solution may be found and implemented before Christmas.”

Various measures would be deployed, including placing cameras down culverts and introducing measures to divert water.

Officers want the South Lakeland local committee to agree that a five-figure sum is set aside for an ‘urgent and rapid response’.

“Once work is completed, the flood and highways teams will return to the committee to update on the activity undertaken and performance of the measures,” the report said.

“Any underspend will then be returned and available for other projects.”

According to United Utilities, the long term answer could require a package of measures costing more than £1.4 million.
