A LORRY laden with 9,363 gift-filled shoeboxes is on its way to Eastern Europe to bring Christmas cheer to some of Romania's poorest children.
The charity Boxes of Hope Cumbria says it cannot thank people across Cumbria and north Lancashire enough for their generous response to this year's appeal.
"Amazing" volunteers have spent countless hours carefully checking, packing and stacking the gift-wrapped shoeboxes at two warehouses in Kendal and Barrow-in-Furness.
Their efforts culminated this week with the lorry being loaded up for its long journey to Oradea, in Romania. Helpers included fire crews from Barrow and staff from Hayes Garden World, which kindly loaned its Kendal depot to the charity.
Boxes of Hope volunteers will be flying out to Romania on Sunday, December 2, to deliver the Christmas parcels - filled with toys, sweets, warm hats and mittens, toothbrushes and soap - to some of the country's neediest youngsters.
