A THREE-hundred-year-old hotel where Bonnie Prince Charlie is reputed to have spent the night in 1745 has new owners.

The George Hotel in Penrith, renowned for its nostalgic, old-warm charm, revolving doors and candlelit restaurant, was on the market for a guide price of £2.75 million.

Law firm Baines Wilson, which has offices in Lancaster and Carlisle, advised Lake District Hotels Ltd on the sale of the oak-beamed, wood-panelled premises at Devonshire Street.

The Grade I-listed property was sold to Everbright Group. Andrew Hill, head of corporate and commercial at Baines Wilson, said: "This deal shows commercial property in Cumbria, hotels especially, is attractive to overseas buyers and our commercial property market remains robust.

“We’re delighted this well-known building in Penrith’s market square has been sold to buyers committed to maintaining its unique character and keeping its heritage alive."

Meanwhile, Baines Wilson has welcomed two new members to expand its commercial property team.

Sophi Al-Tikriti joins as a solicitor from JMW Solicitors, Manchester, and Catherine Cross as a paralegal, having previously worked at Gateley Plc, Manchester.

Sophi has particular experience acting on behalf of landlords and tenants, advising on commercial re-financing and helping with commercial purchases and disposals.

She said the Baines Wilson commercial property team had "a formidable reputation" and she was "delighted to be joining their ranks".

Catherine Cross, meanwhile, has wide-ranging experience helping on transactional and litigated property matters.

Sean Logue, head of commercial property, said: "The commercial property market in Cumbria remains strong and that is reflected in the growth we’ve enjoyed over the past 12 months.

"Sophi and Catherine both bring valuable experience which strengthens our offering and benefits our clients.”A THREE-hundred-year-old hotel where Bonnie Prince Charlie is reputed to have spent the night in 1745 has new owners.
