As quarries have been part of the Lake District 'scenery' for at least 800 years why has UNESCO suddenly decided they spoil the area? (Gazette. November 29, 'Slate mining under threat').

One assumes they inspected places like Honister and took them into account before announcing World Heritage Status.

Or is this yet another example of bureaucracy gone mad by people in an office looking for something to ban?

Better yet, why not remove the status and let us live our lives as we have been doing for the last millennium?
