AS winter takes hold, older people face increased risk from respiratory illness, with the charity Age UK claiming one older person dies every seven minutes from cold weather.

But according to NHS doctor Mark Spencer, those caring for them can greatly reduce this risk by taking several simple steps.

Firstly, make sure they have a well-stocked medicine cabinet and check they have had a flu jab.

Secondly, ensure they keep warm, and thirdly, make sure they keep in touch as isolation can have a negative impact on someone’s emotional and mental health.

If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to contact the NHS by phone, and another tip is to stay away for a few days if you are ill yourself, and finally, if the elderly person has an existing lung condition, inquire with their GP about an emergency ‘Rescue Pack.’

“Prevention is key," said Dr Spencer. "If you have any concerns about an older relative, friend or neighbour, get advice early by speaking to your pharmacist or GP practice."
