KENDAL swimmers gave a good account of themselves with some outstanding performances in an open gala at Blackpool – none more so than triple gold medal winner Thomas Klijn.

The best results for the Kendal club came in the 50, 100 and 200 butterfly events, in which it picked up 4four golds, a silver and three bronze, with Klijn brothers Thomas and Jacob battling it out for the honours in the 100 race.

They swam the race shoulder to shoulder but it was Thomas who found another injection of pace to carry off the win with Jacob taking the silver medal.

Thomas’s power helped him to further wins at 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle, while a superb piece of sprinting at 50 backstroke saw him with a silver medal – while Jacob went on to lift bronze for 100 freestyle with a massive per5sonal best time.

Fourteen-year-old Alex Tallon, ever reliable at 200 butterfly, took it on again outstrip his opponents for a deserved gold and the rapidly maturing Adam Stansfield also put on a dazzling display in the 50 Butterfly, setting a pace his opponents could not match to take another gold for Kendal, then the 100 freestyle brought out the best in him with another gold-winning effort.

Two 13-year-old – Jessie Keech and Jacob Saunders – won bronze medals in the 100 butterfly, while siblings Sophie and Mathew Gibson made it another family celebration with five4 medals between them.

Sophie snatched silver in the 50 backstroke then scooped gold in the 200 backstroke and put together an outstanding all-round performance to win in the 200 individual medley, while Mathew was made his mark with a powerful swim to win silver in the 200 breaststroke followed up by bronze in the 200 backstroke.

Also joining the action, 10-year-old Austin Woodburn bagged a full set of gold, silver and bronze medals, winning the 200 breaststroke, finishing second at 200 backstroke and then sprinting into bronze medal position at 50 butterfly.

Other fine performances brought minor place medals for Chloe Westmorland, Kate Collin and Jacob Saunders at breaststroke, Natalie Pinder at backstroke and IM and Joel Saunders at freestyle.
