THE recent commemorative paper about World War One, published by Newsquest Cumbria, was both interesting and informative. Sadly our relative, Private William Thomson Stott (1897- 1918), was omitted from the list of fallen soldiers, despite being named on the Kendal War memorial.

This prompted us to try to find out more about him and so far we have managed to find out the following details with the help of the librarians at Kendal Library.

He enlisted in the Border Regiment in August 1914, aged 17, later transferring to the East Lancashire Regiment. He served abroad for three years and was wounded in action in Mesopotamia in 1917 (reported in The Westmorland Gazette on the 24/03/17).

Finally on June 16, 1918, he died of Enteric fever in Baghdad (reported in The Westmorland Gazette on the 5/10/18).

We appreciate that collating information from a century ago and across the whole county is not an easy task and the omission of William's details was an unfortunate error. However we just want to ensure that we marked his sacrifice particularly in the centenary of the armistice.

l Editor's note: Several readers have been in touch to say their relatives were not listed in the recent supplement. While efforts were made to include the names of all those from what is now Cumbria who served during World War One, it has become clear that the list is not definitive, for which we apologise.
