Enjoy peaceful rural scenery and impressive views on this walk from Broughton-in-Furness, writes JOHN EDMONDSON. The blend of attractive farmland and low-lying fells make it an enjoyable day out.  

Start from the Market Square in Broughton-in-Furness, grid reference SD 212 875, postcode LA20 6JF.

1 From the Market Square walk along Knott Lane past the public conveniences along the track bending right.

Cross the former railway track, go through a gate/step stile and turn left to walk alongside the hedge on the left. Before reaching a wall turn right to the field corner and walk alongside the wall on the left to a gap stile. Turn left and before reaching Wall End farm bear right; go through a metal gate and walk below trees on the right. Cross the farm track onto the lower track through woodland. Turn left onto the road for 100 yards then right onto the footpath signed Woodland Hall. Walk along the grassy track, across a concrete bridge and then a wooden footbridge. Keep to the right, go through two gates and ascend the steep slope of Thornthwaite Latter Rigg beside a fence on the left. Continue up the signed grassy footpath, swinging left to visit the summit, marked by a stone cairn.

2 Descend to the right on a track through gorse and join a track to Woodland Hall. Turn left past an ornamental fountain; go through a gate and ahead towards a wood. Go through a gateway to the right of a boggy area then keep left to cross a stile hidden behind trees and continue northwards to Ringhouse Farm. Turn right along the farm lane to St John’s Chapel. At the road turn left then right onto the lane to Raisthwaite Farm. Keep left past Swallows Cottage onto a walled track, through a gate, a kissing gate and across two fields to a stile behind a tree in front of a white cottage. Follow the footpath to the left of the cottage and enter Banks Wood via a stepped wall and fence stile. Exit the wood through a metal gate and descend to Climb Stile farm. Pass to the left of the house and follow a grassy track on the left of a tumbled wall. Go through a gate and turn left alongside a wall. Step over Strands Beck and continue along a grassy track through a fence gap. At a path junction in the valley turn right onto an uphill track going between The Knott and Yew Bank with views of Walna Scar and Coniston Old Man ahead.

3 Turn left in front of a gate along a grassy track following the line of the wall on the right. Cross a ladder stile and ascend to the left of Great Intake Tarn. Descend left of the hills ahead, past birch trees and down to a track below the wood ahead. Turn right, pass Bridge End Farm, turn left onto the concrete lane and right on the road. Cross the bridge, go up the hill and turn left onto the path to High Rosthwaite. Turn right at the road, pass Rose Cottage, go up the slope then bear left through a wooden gate onto a signed footpath. At the next road turn left then after a quarter of a mile go right onto the bridleway signed Broughton. Walk uphill along the track, which turns back left to meet the former railway track returning to Broughton.
