REVIVAL plans are brewing for Kendal's last remaining riverside pub.

The Bridge Hotel at Stramongate was put up for sale in early January, as reported by the Gazette, and bought by Levens-based funfair operator Taylor's.

Plans to refurbish and extend the inn have now been submitted to South Lakeland District Council by Linda Taylor.

Ten full-time jobs are on the cards, as well as nine en-suite guest bedrooms; a smart new reception area and a function room large enough to host small weddings; a beer garden and patio with views of the River Kent; an updated kitchen and a complete refurbishment inside.

According to planning documents lodged with SLDC by Mrs Taylor, the Bridge's garden is overgrown and the property is falling into "a state of disrepair".

"The appearance of the Bridge Hotel in its current state welcomes no one either to the property or to cross the bridge into town," state the plans.

Two "unsightly", steep and slippery external staircases are proposed to be demolished, and a new extension created to replace an unattractive old one. The overall aim is to transform the pub into "something more fitting for its prime location".

The Bridge is thought to have been built in 1738 by silk mill owner Garnett Braithwaite.
