AN ABLE and experienced hiker died after a fall while traversing Striding Edge as he climbed Helvellyn.

An inquest at Cockermouth Coroner’s Court heard that Brendan Forde had negotiated the route on several previous occasions, and on July 26 last year attempted to repeat the route in dry, warm conditions.

However, his hiking companion Mrs Pamela Hurry, who had taken a lower route and arranged to meet him at the summit of Helvellyn, became worried when he did not arrive.

The court heard a group of other walkers spotted the victim below Striding Edge and off duty senior paramedic Brent Kenny courageously traversed a treacherous slope to reach Mr Forde.

Mr Kenny said he quickly realised the 73-year-old had suffered multiple injuries, and despite repeatedly using CPR in a valiant effort to revive him, it became clear his efforts were in vain.

Mr Forde, of Wilton Grove, Penwortham, Preston, died at the scene and his body was taken from the mountain by helicopter.

Concluding that his death was the result of an accidental fall, assistant county coroner Craig Smith said this was a “most unfortunate and tragic incident,” and he praised Mr Kenny’s efforts in trying to save him.

“Mr Forde was a devoted father and grandfather who loved his family and led a very full and active life,” he said.

Mr Smith, who offered condolences to Mr Forde’s family, said the retired property maintenance worker, who was born in Dungannon, Northern Ireland, was a popular and well liked member of the community.

He was regular at his local Catholic church and had many other interests including bridge, hiking and football.
