A FORGOTTEN Cumbrian craft has been brought to life again at the Museum of Lakeland Life, Kendal. From her workshop, Lorna Singleton keeps alive an ancient Lakes tradition – Modern Basketry. She is one of the UKs last remaining swillers, as she uses long-established methods to create beautiful hand-woven baskets for the modern day. Swilling was popular in 19th century Cumbria, referring to an ancient craft practised in England - oak basket-making. Lorna is only one of four people in the world maintaining this skill and way of life, and she now has her beautiful work on show at the museum from Saturday (January 18) until May 6.
