Specialist engineers will be working overnight on Thursday (24 January) to pinpoint the source of a leak on the gas main under the A590, in South Cumbria.

Cadent, which maintains all gas mains in the North West, has done work to stop the immediate safety risk, but the pipe needs fixing before this gets any worse.

It has agreed, with Highways England, a seven-hour window from 8pm on Thursday until to 3am Friday – during which it can reduce the A590 to one-lane, while its teams work in the road.

The road remains open, with traffic lights managing the flow of vehicles around the work area.

This is near to Swarthmoor, between Ulverston and Barrow.

Gas supplies will not be affected and the traffic lights will be removed once the teams leave site around 3am.

Once the nature and location of the leak is found, Cadent will work with Highways England to plan the least disruptive means to repair this gas main, which helps keep many thousands of homes in the local area warm.

Previous investigation work, over three hours overnight in December, was inconclusive.

The seven-hour window overnight on Thursday gives Cadent teams more time to look over a wider search area.
