100 YEARS AGO - 1919
The new company, registered as the Backbarrow Charcoal Iron Company Ltd, which has acquired this concern at Backbarrow, is now active.
The work of renovating is in progress and it is expected the furnace will go into blast in May.
50 YEARS AGO - 1969
Richard Marsh, Minister of Transport, is now inviting applications for the right to build and operate a petrol filling station as part of a service area (on a ten or 21 year lease) to be built at Burton on the Lancaster-Penrith section of the M6 motorway.
This section is expected to be completed in August 1970.
25 YEARS AGO - 1994
Plans to run a ‘train’ as a park-and-ride scheme around Bowness will make the area the laughing stock of the national park, Cllr Geoffrey Campbell told a meeting of Windermere Parish Council.
Councillors were incensed at the fact that they had not been consulted over the matter. It was felt it could cause traffic congestion.
