A COMMUNITY shed has been unveiled in an allotment in Ulverston to help retired men tackle loneliness and isolation.

The UK Men’s Sheds Association, a national organisation, is a project aimed to create community spaces for men to connect with local people.

The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but for groups of men to enjoy together.

A new allotment shed, based on Lune Street, was officially opened by Ulverston mayor Cllr Dave Webster on Friday morning.

Several councillors and local people came to witness the opening and praised the idea of the shed.

Ron Pritchard, a volunteer who made the project happen, said the idea would be a great benefit to the town of Ulverston.

“I wanted to create a space in Ulverston where men could come and not be alone,” he said.

“There are projects like this in Barrow and other areas nearby, but some people don’t have the transport to get there.

“By setting one up here, locals can come and interact with one another, so it is a great benefit.

“It is important because it is a chance for men who might feel lonely to come and meet new friends - that is what it’s all about.”

Mr Pritchard said the £1,500 shed had taken more than a year to finally be installed.

He said it had been a difficult process but he was glad it was finally up and running.

“It has been tough getting people to help us build the shed but I am happy it is finally finished,” he said. “A lot of local businesses have helped us out with materials and it will be a strong addition to the town.”

Cllr Mark Wilson attended the opening and he said the shed was a fantastic idea.

“It is a well-regulated place so I know people will keep an eye on the shed,” he said. “The idea for men to come together and support one another is brilliant and it’s a great idea.”

Sessions on Lune Road will last for two hours and include gardening and constructing items like bird boxes. To become involved with the project in Ulverston, call 01229 231954.
