Kendal Town A v

Kidsgrove Athletic A

TORRENTIAL rain led to the abandonment of Kendal Town’s Evo-Stik West Division game against Kidsgrove Athletic

The Mintcakes were trailing 3-1 at half-time when the referee decided enough was enough with conditions unplayable.

The game only went ahead after the ST&B Accountants Stadium pitch passed a morning inspection following heavy overnight rain.

But after a first half played in a downpour, the referee called a halt to proceedings at the break.

Anthony Malbon (two) and Chris Budrys were on target for Kidsgrove with Billy Akrigg replying for Town.

Kendal were 1-0 down after five minutes when Malbon curled the ball into the top right hand corner of the net from distance.

Kendal pressed for the equaliser and looked a threat most notably through Steven Yawson who’s pace caused problems for the Kidsgrove defence.

However Kidsgrove missed a glorious opportunity after Will Saxon blazed the ball over while Budrys one on one with the keeper toe poked the ball wide of the post.

Kendal equalised on 22 minutes following good work from Dan Shearwood before Billy Akrigg scored from close range. With the weather conditions worsening both sides battled the elements before Kidgsrove regained the lead after Malbons delivery across the penalty area was placed into the net by Chris Budrys.

The Mintcakes pressed for the equaliser while Akrigg’s header was superbly saved by Kidsgrove shot stopper Kieran Harrison who parried the ball over for a corner, before Yawsons powerful strike rebounded off the post.

With half time fast approaching Malbon made it 3-1 for the visitors after the club captain scored an unstoppable goal from 25 yards.

However after both teams went in for half time referee Anthony Parkinson abandoned the match at the start of the second half.

Kendal are now four points adrift from safety as they travel to play third placed Radcliffe FC on Saturday, Kendal’s next home game is scheduled to be played on Saturday February 9 when they entertain Glossop North End in the big relegation game at the bottom of the table.

*Kendal announced that they will be holding a meeting with the supporters on February 11 at the club, with the meeting getting underway at 7pm
