CAMPAIGNERS for nuclear disarmament were in Kendal on Saturday highlighting their opposition to the Trident submarine programme and the transportation of warheads on Cumbria's roads.
They were urging people to sign the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament’s national petition calling on the Government to support a global ban on nuclear weapons. They were also seeking support for a new petition calling on Cumbria County Council to review preparations for dealing with any nuclear convoy accident.
Philip Gilligan, from South Lakeland CND, said: "Those signing our petitions want to see an end to the global threat of mutually assured destruction which is an inevitable consequence of nuclear weapons of mass destruction like the Trident system.
"They, also, recognise that transporting nuclear warheads on some of the busiest roads in Cumbria exposes our local communities to particular and unacceptable risks, especially when fire brigades are not even informed when a convoy is due to pass through an area.”
