SOUTH Lakeland Decorative and Fine Arts Society's next lecture features Amanda Herries talking about Skin Deep, the Beastly Art of Beauty: Reality and Ridicule.

A well-known writer and lecturer in decorative arts and social history, covering Britain from the 17th and 19th centuries, Amanda's lecture in cinema one at Kendal's Brewery Arts Centre on Tuesday, February 12, concerns the effect of the cosmetics and beauty aids available in the 18th and 19th centuries when both men and women became 'fashion victims,' quite often fatally.

Amanda - a trustee of the National Trust of Scotland who writes and lectures worldwide on decorative arts - looks into the beauties shown in society portraits, so often lampooned mercilessly as the subjects of savage caricatures by cartoonists of the 18th Century and asks what was the effect of the cosmetics and beauty aids available at the time.

The lecture starts at 1.30pm.
