THE humble garden shed has been named in a list of outdoor features which could add value to British homes.

Decking, water features, fruit trees and good lighting could also help boost house prices, according to research by BillyOh.com the garden furniture and buildings company.

It said a well-kept and spacious log cabin or shed could supply the extra storage space needed by many families, while offering security for valuable tools and equipment.

  • "A simple lawn and set of plants are not enough to make a backyard stand out from the neighbours," said the online retailer, "but patios or decking, readily available organic snacks and a simple water feature could all add that little extra to the value of your home too.”

The top five outdoor features identified by BillyOh are:

  • A patio - properties that have a stone patio or wooden decking could see their value to rise by four figures as a result, said the company.

They allow homeowners to spend quality time in their gardens even when the lawn is muddy.

  • A source of food - a fruit tree or two at the bottom of the garden is low-maintenance, lovely to look at, could provide you with delicious healthy snacks and add value to the house too.

Orderly and productive vegetable patches might require a little more looking after, but well-kept examples could also contribute to a rise in the price of a house, as the trends of healthy eating and environmental awareness continue to rise.

  •  A shed - even the most unassuming garden shed or log cabin could add thousands of pounds to the value of your home, particularly if it’s properly looked after, said the retailer.
  •  A water feature - a simple pond, a sculpted fountain or a bird bath could set your garden apart and help to welcome wildlife.
  •  Lighting - a movement-sensing outdoor light is designed to deter unwanted intruders like burglars and foxes, while LED lights that line pathways or patios and fences or flower beds can give gardens a safe and welcoming feel.
