THE man in charge of Newton Rigg College’s farms, Matt Bagley, has been elected vice-chairman of the northern region of the National Sheep Association’ (NSA).

Mr Bagley, who has responsibility for 1,400 breeding ewes, has a background as a livestock farmer but has worked in education for the last 15 years. He joined Newton Rigg, which is part of York’s Askham Bryan College, in 2013. Joanne Briggs, operations director of the NSA, said: “We are pleased to welcome Matt Bagley as our northern region vice-chairman and are looking forward to strengthening our relationship with Askham Bryan College as it educates and supports the sheep industry of the future, particularly through its young shepherds.” In 2017, Mr Bagley oversaw the opening of the National Sheep Husbandry Centre at Newton Rigg’s Low Beckside hill farm.

His involvement with the NSA goes back for more than a decade.

He has served on various committees, including at national level and in the past he has run the NSA’s Young Shepherd of the Year competition, including the grand final.
