THE ancient Lakeland tradition of the Mayor’s Hunt has taken place at Troutbeck.

The event, which dates from 1771, began with Friday evening’s Mayor Making Ceremony in the Village Institute. Nicola Maloney, the sitting mayor, appointed Steve Kennedy, who has been secretary of the Coniston Foxhounds for nearly 30 years, to serve as her successor in the mayoral role.

A good attendance enjoyed the traditional entertainments and supper during the evening along with a talk on the geology and mining history of the area by Dr Chris Lane.

On Saturday morning, the new mayor met with the masters and followers of the Coniston Foxhounds at the Queen’s Head Hotel for the Mayor’s Hunt.

Mr Kennedy said: “It’s a huge honour to be elected as mayor and it was great to see this ancient tradition being so well attended.”

Local charities benefit from the annual event and this year the Mayor’s Hunt Committee will be making donations of £250 to each of the Rosemere Foundation and MacMillan Nurses. This follows on from last year’s donation to St Mary’s Hospice of £350.
