A Northern service was stopped at Silverdale railway station on the Furness Line with passengers reporting that train staff were asking for anyone with medical experience to assist.
Two ambulances and police were called to the train with passengers interviewed.
One witness said they believed a man had started choking on food.
Passengers were transferred to a new train which returned to Carnforth before switching lines and continuing its journey.
