BEING a parent is the hardest job in the world - that’s a fact!

From the early days of parenthood we struggle with challenges such as our baby’s sleep cycle (and the lack of it for us) through to keeping calm when handling little Nero tantrums, and eventually with our children leaving home (and returning) as they take their first steps towards independence.

While we are busy doing so many jobs and being taxi driver, doctor, cleaner, cook, story reader, entertainer, counsellor and provider - we can forget to take care of our own needs. We often only become aware of this when we blow a gasket over the smallest of things.

There are some things that may help you to take care of your needs as a parent:

1. Work as a team – with your children and the adults in your family. Don’t be afraid to share out the household chores.

2. Have time off occasionally – even if it’s something as simple as taking a shower without interruptions, going for a run or walking the dog alone.

3. Talk to someone you trust about parenthood. It’s always reassuring to hear that your concerns are natural and that certain phases will pass.

Don’t worry we all have days when we think we are not doing as good a job as the next person. If you don’t take care of yourself and allow yourself a break or a treat every now and again resentment will build up.

Your wellbeing is very important in enabling you to be the best parent you can be.
