ALBERT Morris, of Castle Walk, Kendal, sent in this old photograph of his grandfather Corporal John Morris (seated, front row centre).

Albert said: "John Morris was born in Ancoats, Manchester. I have traced our family back to 1760 in Manchester (Joseph Morris, died October 14,1810). I think they were Huguenots.

"This photograph was taken in South Africa, during the the Boer War, which lasted from 1899-1902.

"His regiment was the Lancashire Fusiliers.

"John Morris was a professional soldier and was later in the Royal Irish Fusiliers and died at the Dardanelles in 1915, aged 34.

"I have often wondered if any relative of the other men in the picture have a copy of this photograph?"

Meanwhile, Mrs M.B. Hubbard, who lives at Darwen in Lancashire, sent in two very old postcards of the Lake District, which she thought readers would be interested to see.

The picture with the cattle in the lake shows Windermere and is believed to date back to at least 1906.

The other, featuring a horse-drawn carriage, is titled 'On the road to Grasmere'.

Mrs Hubbard wrote: "I am a regular reader of The Westmorland Gazette and I enjoy it very much.

"I used to live in Hawkshead as a district nurse, midwife and health visitor - that was the best bit of my life!"
