THIS week it’s less about the law and more about the practical things to consider when you are moving house.

Having instructed a good solicitor, hopefully you've exchanged contracts and things are moving smoothly towards completion and moving day.

Now you need to notify everybody about your change of address.

There will probably be more people and organisations than you think.

It’s not just friends and family and the utility companies; it's schools, clubs, doctors and dentists.

Remember also all the financial institutions you are involved with - pensions, insurance, banks, credit card companies and the like.

Don’t forget the government – HMRC, benefits agency, local council, DVLA.

Then of course there are all the entertainment providers, telephone, broadband and satellite companies.

Checking your bank statements for direct debits and standing orders is a useful place to start as it acts as a reminder.

It is also helpful if your paperwork is in order because you can easily see who has been writing to you.

The sooner you make a list of who you need to notify, the less stress you will have at the time.

For extra piece of mind, however, you may decide to get any post that arrives for you after you have moved redirected, by signing up to the Royal Mail’s redirection service for three, six or 12 months. This can also be important to help protect against identify fraud.

Don’t forget to cancel regular deliveries such as newspapers and milk and change subscriptions.

As you move out you will need to remember to read meters and provide the correct information to avoid billing problems.

You might also need to get appliances disconnected.

With everything done and organised, all you need to do is remember where you put the kettle and teabags!
