The late Donald Campbell’s beloved mascot is being brought back to life thanks to Britain's oldest teddy bear manufacturer.
Merrythought, based in Ironbridge, Shropshire, was tasked to revive and recreate its iconic little 1950s bear, Mr Whoppit, exclusively for Danbury Mint.
Mr Whoppit shot to fame as the lucky mascot for world record speed breaker Donald Campbell, who lost his life in 1967 while breaking the world water speed record across Lake Coniston in the Lake District.
After the incident, Campbell’s beloved companion was one of the only items to be recovered from the wreckage of his hydrofoil, Bluebird K7.
Director of Merrythought, Sarah Holmes, said: “The story of Donald Campbell is that of tragedy, but we at Merrythought are so proud to be reviving this moment in history and celebrating Campbell’s record-breaking achievements.”
Mr Whoppit is available exclusively from Danbury Mint at a retail price of £149.
