Patrons of the Ambleside Parish Centre gathered to honour manager Helen Minton, who is retiring after 10 years in the position.

During that time Ms Minton has helped transform the venue into a lively hub of the local community. In 2009, when she began her work, there were only two regular user groups; there are now 17, including youth clubs, a bereavement group and 'Men in Sheds' clubs for older folk.

At a tea party held to celebrate her time as manager, centre users and volunteers sat down to an array of cakes and scones.

Dr John Biggs, Chair of the centre's directors, led the tributes, speaking of Ms Minton's enthusiasm, charisma and empathy:

"At the heart of it all is the way Helen operates as a great encourager - she starts things and encourages their growth," he said.

Ms Minton, cutting a special 'thank-you' cake baked for the occasion, said: "It's been a gift to be here and to learn that every single one of us matters, belongs, and has something to give.

"We all have different gifts, skills and experiences, but when we do it together - how much more we can achieve."

Her successor is Caroline Gunning, of Kendal, who has been involved with the Scouting movement in many capacities, and has also worked with the Calvert Trust and Westmorland Homecare.
