FIREFIGHTERS have been praised for their quick actions in tackling a major house fire.

Two crews from Ulverston - one full-time and one on-call, along with on-call crews from Grange and Windermere, raced to a house in Buck Yeats near Newby Bridge at 8.37pm on Sunday.

A fire had started in the attic on the third floor of the house and firefighters fought their way through the flames and smoke to get to the source of the fire.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire from inside the property while the others used thermal imaging camera to look for hotspots and to ascertain the spread of the fire.

Crews spent around four hours at the scene and despite the devastating damage caused to the property their brave actions have been hailed as being responsible for saving the house from being completely destroyed.

Station manager Roger Exley, based at Barrow Fire Station, also attended the incident as a senior manager and has praised the firefighters for their quick response in “difficult conditions”.

“It was a great effort by firefighters from Ulverston, Grange and Windermere,” he said.

“They were called to a building fire near Newby Bridge.

“Their prompt action, under difficult conditions, has saved the building from a serious fire.”
