ONE of the most senior Rabbis in the country has returned to York, five years on from leading the Liberal Jewish Community's first Shabbat - or Sabbath- morning service in 40 years.
Rabbi Danny Rich, the chief executive of Liberal Judaism,co-led a service yesterday with York’s own student Rabbi, Gabriel Webber.
A spokesman said the 100-strong York Liberal Jewish Community had become established as a 'key component of York’s vibrant faith landscape, holding regular services, festival celebrations, conversions, marriages, baby namings, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and even the world’s first gender-neutral B’nei Mitzvah.'
The service, held at the Friends Meeting House in Friargate, welcomed into the community two more Jews by choice, and also hosted a special talk by Inspector Kevin Kelly, leader of an operational firearms team and Road Crimes Unit in North Yorkshire and spokesperson for the Jewish Police Association.
He provided an insight into his journey as a police officer and how modern policing has changed, improving for people from different backgrounds and beliefs.
