CREATED by chainsaw carver Rolande Urwin, this wooden train planter has been commissioned by Carnforth Town Council to welcome visitors to the town, at Crag Bank roundabout.

The engine-shaped carving was chosen to reflect Carnforth's railway heritage and its role in the classic film Brief Encounter, filmed at the town's railway station.

The flowers and plants will be cared for by Don Astley, the council's outdoor maintenance officer, said town clerk Bob Bailey.

The council hopes the planter - named Brief Encounter II - will "soon become an iconic part of the fabric of the town", he added.

Woodcarver Rolande is based at Holme.
