THE Brexit Party came out on top as voters in the North West had their say in the European election.

Mirroring the scene across much of the country, Nigel Farage's fledgling party took a 31.2 per cent share of the vote ahead of Labour, the Lib Dems, the Green Party and the Conservatives.

That meant they saw three MEPs elected, Claire Fox, Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen and David Bull.

Theresa Griffin and Julie Ward will represent Labour in Brussels with veteran Chris Davies making a return for the Lib Dems alongside Jane Brophy.

Long-standing Lancaster Green Gina Dowding was the eighth MEP elected for the region.

Former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson has failed in his bid to get elected to the European Parliament.

Mr Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, came in eighth place in the North West England region with 38,908 votes.

Voters went to the polls on Thursday but the results were not announced until the voting closed across Europe on Sunday night with the North West declaring at around 12.30am.
