TREASURED memories of a much-loved mum, nan and great-nan have inspired six women to climb Snowdon overnight this weekend.

The close-knit Chorley family lost Hazel - described as "the matriarch and heart of our family" - to Alzheimer's disease a year ago.

She and her beloved husband Alf lived in Burneside for almost 60 years, and Hazel died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on April 19, 2018 - the couple's 60th wedding anniversary.

Hazel, 84, was "completely devoted" to her children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was renowned for her love of baking, said her granddaughter Aimée Chorley-Hoggarth.

"After she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and her health declined, Alf and the family were able to care for her at home, being helped in the final weeks by the district nurses from Station House Surgery," said Aimée.

"Hazel played for a ladies' darts team, enjoyed holidays abroad with her sisters and friends and an annual trip to Blackpool with Alf.

"But she was most well known for her love of baking and always had a batch of coconut tarts or oat crunch biscuits fresh out of the oven for visitors - or she’d take them out in her shopper to pass out to anyone she might meet on her bus trips to town."

Born at Carr Bank, Hazel was raised at Shaw Green and her first job was at K Shoes.

After marrying Alf and settling in Burneside, she took on various jobs in the village to fit in around bringing up their children and caring for her grandchildren, the longest being in the canteen at Croppers, where she developed her famous baking skills.

She cleaned part-time at Kendal's County Hall until finally retiring aged 72.

This weekend's fundraising in Hazel's memory will see the "Chorley's Angels" team climb Wales' highest mountain on Saturday night.

Trekking up Snowdon will be Hazel's daughters Claire Ellwood and Elaine Chorley; granddaughters Aimée, Ellie Rowlandson and Jodie Chorley, and great-granddaughter Hattie Chorley - three sets of mothers and daughters.

Sunday's homecoming event is a family fun day at Burneside Cricket Club, where everyone is welcome from 2pm.
