ECO graffiti scrawled across a Kendal bridge will be removed, a meeting has heard.

The political slogans on a footbridge over the A591 Kendal bypass was raised at a meeting in the town on Tuesday.

The messages read: “Declare climate emergency” and on the other side stated: “Make Ecocide law”.

At a meeting of South Lakeland local committee, Cllr Ben Berry asked highways managers if the county council had any plans to either remove the graffiti or if not, could they correct the spelling mistake – sparking laughter in the chamber.

The word “emergency” originally had a letter missing, he explained.

Peter Hosking, a highways network manager, said it reminded him of a scene from the 1970s sit-com Citizen Smith. The lead character Wolfie, played by Robert Lindsay, ran out of space daubing a long slogan on a wall, he said.

Mr Hosking said: “We will be treating that (bridge) and we do have plans to close the bypass overnight for grass cutting works later this summer and it will be dealt with at that time.”

Cllr Berry said: “It’s graffiti. The message is fine but you don’t have to break the law to do it.”
