A FORMER police officer who was left disabled after being hit by a drink driver has been identified as the man who died in a sailing accident.

Stephen Hague, 57,  was pulled from Windermere after getting into difficulty during a session at Blackwell Sailing Club on Wednesday.

Police have confirmed that his death is not being treated as suspicious. 

Officers were called to Glebe Road, alongside other emergency services, at 12.52pm on June 12 following concerns for his welfare after he had fallen in the water.

Medical professionals provided treatment to the man at the scene.

The North West Ambulance Service and an air ambulance also attended. 

Dozens of tributes have been paid to Mr Hague. 

Police say the coroner has been informed.
