A BARROW man with a “flagrant disregard” for authority has been jailed after attacking three police officers who were trying to help him.

Jack Daniel Frederick Beale was travelling on a Stagecoach bus in Oxford Street when he suffered a seizure, a court heard.

Concerned passengers called 999 and an ambulance was called to the scene on May 16.

Paramedics told 22-year-old Beale that he needed to be taken to Furness General Hospital but he refused and became verbally abusive.

Prosecutors said ambulance staff contacted police and when officers arrived Beale swung a punch at one PC and he was taken to the ground.

As the first officer attempted to restrain him Beale then tried to bite him before turning his head and spitting at the PC.

The officer was forced to use Pava spray and Beale was then escorted on the ambulance to the hospital, magistrates were told.

During the short journey to FGH Beale then spat in the face of another police officer and spat on the arm of a third officer.

At South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court, Beale, of Egerton Court, admitted three counts of assaulting an emergency services worker.

He pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to bail on June 5 and causing criminal damage to a cell at Barrow Station on June 12.

Jailing him for a total of 27 weeks, magistrates deemed Beale’s offending was so serious it warranted a custodial sentence.

The bench said Beale showed a “flagrant disregard” for court orders and authority, he had a significant record of previous offending and committed the offences while subject to a community order.

He was ordered to pay £395 compensation.
