AROUND 500 riders took part in the popular annual Sam Houghton mountain bike challenge.

Perhaps the “muddiest” edition so far, the sold-out event was held in memory of keen mountain biker Sam Houghton who sadly lost his battle against cancer in May 2006 aged only 22.

Proceeds from the event went to the charity Cancer Research UK.

With two route options to choose from riders took to the valleys of Longsleddale, Kentmere and Troutbeck over the course of either 25km or 45km.

Both races started from the Wheelbase store, the Mill Yard in Staveley.

The long route ascended more than 1,400m and included several very tough climbs.

Staveley’s Rob Jebb was the first competitor back and completed the long course ride in a rapid time of two hours and 33 minutes - the fastest time for the course this year.

After the riding there was the traditional “after-party” held at Hawkshead Brewery with presentations taking place and riders celebrating what was once again a great day.

A spokesperson from WheelBase said: “All riders deserve huge congratulations on taking part in a testing challenge and for helping to raise funds for such a great cause.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to the organisers of the event.

“We would also like to say thank you to all of the marshals and volunteers that manned the feed stations and each of the 42 gates along the route.”

Last Christmas dozens of mountain bikers donned Father Christmas outfits and rode around Borrans and Ings raising £800 for Cancer Research UK.

Since 2008, more than £180,000 has been fundraised through various events and activities held across the South Lakes in Sam’s name.
