FARMERS from across South Lakeland descended on Yorkshire for the biannual National Sheep Association North Sheep event which was being held in the county for the first time in six years.

More than 5,000 people visited New Hall Farm, at Rathmell, near Settle, for the sheep showcase, and in terms of numbers and trade stands, it was described by many as one of the best yet.

It was hosted by the Frankland family who are admired throughout the industry for their stockmanship.

The day focused on key issues, including sheep exports, share farming, sheep health and welfare, and the future for Environmental Land Management Schemes. Farmers from across the region and beyond experienced a day of knowledge transfer, discussion and debate whilst witnessing the latest industry trends and equipment.

Seminars were packed and the speakers were all keen to highlight that ‘productivity and environment improvements need to go hand in hand’ and that there are opportunities there for farmers, but they need to be grasped.

A shearing competition sponsored by British Wool saw Cumbria YFC placed second behind Lancashire YFC but ahead of Yorkshire YFC.

For many who attended they were there to see a showcase farm, and more than 3,000 people took part in the farm tours.

The Herdwick Sheep Breeders' Association picked up a second in the best breed society stand competition while Hawes Auction Mart placed third in the best indoor stand category.
