A COMMUNITY is coming together to commemorate the life of MP Jo Cox, who was murdered three years ago in west Yorkshire.

Mrs Cox died on June 16, 2016, after being shot and stabbed in Birstall by a constituent who held far-right views and who was later sentenced to life imprisonment.

Since then her sister Kim Leadbeater and friends from the Jo Cox Foundation have organised The Great Get Together – an annual mix of street parties and barbecues aimed at bringing communities together.

This coming Friday Barrow will be hosting its own version –The Great Get Together Summer Fun Night – in St Aidan’s church, Middlehill, from 6.30pm

Barrow MP John Woodcock has pledged his support to commemorate the life of his friend.

Mr Woodcock said: “Jo spent her life encouraging communities to come together and focus on the things we have in common so The Great Get Together is a great event to run in her memory.

"Her message that we have far more in common than those things that might divide us rings true in Barrow so I am delighted that the thriving St Aidan’s parish community is hosting Friday’s event.”

There will be picnic style food, refreshments, live music from Kazzy B, games and family bingo.

St Aidan’s parish event co-ordinator Angela Rogers said: “I am very pleased to host this as our monthly community event.

"It allows people to socialise in a safe, friendly and inclusive environment. It also allows my voluntary work to go hand-in-hand with my role as constituency support officer for John.”

The event is free to attend and more information is available on the St Aidan’s church hall Facebook page.

Thomas Mair, who held far-right views, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a whole life order.
