VICTIMS of domestic abuse across Cumbria are to be given video doorbells to mark Neighbourhood Watch Week 2019 (June 17 to 23).

Embracing new technology and working with charities such as Victim Support and Crimestoppers is the way ahead for preventing crime in the county, said Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch Association.

The nature of crime is changing, it added, and the association is working to "combat new threats" and encourage people to be aware of what is going on in their neighbourhood.

Joe Murray, chair of Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch, said the video doorbells would help people feel safe and secure, and they would also be offered to Neighbourhood Watch members at a discount.

He encouraged people to become a member of Neighbourhood Watch by visiting cumbrianeighbourhoodwatch.co.uk

Claire Powell, contact manager for Victim Support in Cumbria, said: “We are delighted to be working with Neighbourhood Watch and Crimestoppers to help ensure as many victims of crime as possible are getting the help and support they need, whether or not they choose to report to the police.

“Safety is our main concern when supporting victims of domestic abuse and living rurally can mean people need extra help to feel safe. We are delighted to be able to offer video alarms to people we are supporting through domestic abuse cases which will have a huge impact on helping them feel and stay safe.”

Peter McCall, Cumbria police and crime commissioner, praised Neighbourhood Watch as "an incredibly important aspect of catching criminals in local policing".

He said: "Residents know their local area better than anyone and often notice small changes and inconsistencies that those who are not in the area every day wouldn’t.

"Having Neighbourhood Watch volunteers who report any suspicious activity to the police really does help us reduce crime in communities all across Cumbria. I would like to thank Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch Association for all the fantastic work they are doing – we really are grateful for the invaluable service they give on behalf of the community.”
