CONSERVATION charity Friends of the Lake District is inviting people to celebrate the summer solstice and its 85th anniversary tomorrow evening (Friday).

Starting from Keswick at 7.30pm, the solstice walk will wind its way up Latrigg, arriving at the summit for people to share a glass of bubbly and piece of cake as the sun sets.

The charity's landscape engagement officer, Ruth Kirk, said: "It’s the perfect place for a party to watch the sun set with friends old and new. Everyone is welcome, children and dogs too, and there will be fabulous 85th birthday cake referencing what’s so special about the Lake District”.

Friends of the Lake District was founded on June 17, 1934 at a rally in Fitz Park, Keswick, with the aim of establishing a Lake District National Park - a hope realised in 1951.

Douglas Chalmers, chief executive, said: “Friends of the Lake District may be 85 but we’re looking forward more than we’re looking back.

"Of course we’re proud of our achievements, and very aware of what the Lake District and Cumbria might look like today if it wasn’t for our efforts, but we have more work to do, and the need for us is greater than at any time in our history.

"We recognise we work in the name of our members, and together our emotional impetus, skill and knowledge will still win victories.”

The solstice walk is free and there is no need to book. For details see www.friendsofthelakedistrict.org.uk
