CONISTON-BORN war hero, Lance-Corporal James Hewitson, will feature in the newly-published seventh title in the ten-part Victoria Crosses on the Western Front series.
Victoria Crosses on the Western Front is authored by Paul Oldfield and retells the continuation of the German 1918 offensives.
LCpl Hewitson was born on 15th October 1892 at Thwaite Farm, Coniston and was educated at Coniston School.
He later worked on the land as a timber feller around Coniston.
He enlisted on 17th November 1914 in 8th King’s Own and went to France on 27th September 1915.
After the war Mr Hewitson worked as a road repairer for 10 years, but suffered from neurasthenia.
He would later die at Stanley Hospital, in Ulverston on 2nd March 1963 and is buried in St Andrew’s Churchyard, where he was commemorated with a special paving stone on Thursday 26th April last year.
