HOW right Valerie Jones is when she ways the public and especially children are being bombarded by the media and politicians into claiming our planet is doomed (Letters, June 27).

I was born in 1934 when air pollution must have been bad. Then came the war: millions of tons of shipping sunk, oil and ammunition sunk in the sea - that's what I call pollution. But surprise, surprise, nature took it her her stride.

I am 85 years old. I have lived in the Lake District all my life. Growing up in Little Langdale, roaming the fields and woods, I had a wonderful childhood. Nothing has changed; the countryside is just as beautiful as it was then.
