ARTIST Marianne Birkby's latest exhibition Flora of the Fells is showing at Ambleside's Rydal Hall this summer. Her new paintings are inspired by the diversity of flora on the Cumbrian fells and include oils, charcoals and pastels and can be seen at the hall’s Old Tea Room shop until the end of August. Marianne stated that included in one of her paintings is an iconic flower that is the symbol of Cumbria. It is featured on the official flag of Cumbria with three white flowers. The flowers are the Grass of Parnassus (or bog star) and they are not as widespread as they used to be, thriving in boggy and open fellsides.

Rydal Hall is open daily (10am-5pm).
