THE North Craven Heritage Trust held the Bill Mitchell Memorial Walk above Malham.

Bill Mitchell (1928-2015), the editor of the Dalesman for 20 years and author of many books of local interest, was a past president of the NCHT and led its summer outings for a number of years.

Members were joined by Janet Mitchell, Bill’s daughter and his granddaughter Rachel Cox.

The walk was led by Dr David Johnson and members experienced time travel over 380 million years as he explained the geological basis of the landscape and its historical aspects, including the monastic heritage.

It supported the indefatigable work of Judy Rogers and the People and the Dales project (https://ydmt.org/what-we-do/people-and-the-dales) in extending enjoyment of the Dales to people from nearby urban areas who suffer deprivation, disabled people, youngsters, refugees/asylum seekers and people with mental health issues.

The trust described it as 'altogether a sociable day under big skies and a chorus of lark song, in aid of a good cause, adding: "The Trust hopes that it was a fitting memorial to the life, work and leadership of Bill Mitchell."
