KIRKBY Stephen is marking Stage 4 (Gateshead to Kendal) of The Tour of Britain by hosting SPOKE - a celebration of all things cycling from Saturday, September 7 to Tuesday, September 10.

SPOKE will be filled with a host of community activity for all ages, including performance, film, spoken word, commissioned artwork, a family day, food and drink, and the chance to try out different cycling activities in and around Kirkby Stephen during the Tour of Britain.

There will be an Eisberg Sprint section located in Kirkby Stephen on Tuesday, September 10. People will be able to see riders battle it out to be first across the sprint line to claim points, and bonus seconds (three, two and one) to be taken off their overall race time – making it a key place to watch some fast-paced and decisive racing.

With the race being televised live on ITV4 from start to finish, and broadcast around the world, this is seen as great opportunity to highlight Kirkby Stephen on TV as it cheers on the riders.

SPOKE has been organised by Kirkby Stephen Town Council and Kirkby Stephen Community Arts (KSCA).

The Tour of Britain will pass through Kirkby Stephen on Tuesday, September 10.

In the run up to the tour's visit, KSCA will be working with local schools, community groups and individuals to create bunting and artwork to dress the route through Brough and Kirkby Stephen.

"We would also like to make a call out for any old bikes or bike parts that we can use to decorate and form part of our commissioned artwork, curated by Cumbrian born designer Louie Whitemore," said town councillor Conrad Lynch.

Anyone with bike-related junk or who would like to help create dressing for the tour route is asked to contact Kirkby Stephen Community Arts at kate@kirkbystephencommunityarts.co.uk or call 017683 71885.

Full details of SPOKE will be announced in August.
