CUMBRIA was hit by harsh thunderstorms and lightning last night.

The storm came after a day of beautiful sunshine with temperatures rising up to 28 degrees.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms was issued by the Met Office from 6pm on Tuesday until 9am on Wednesday.

Some managed to witness the event unfold and catch it on video.

Jimmy Brennan, of Kendal, was able to record some of that footage.

A house has also been badly damaged after it was struck by lightning, blowing a hole in the roof.

Emergency services were called at 4.45am to a property in Thursby, near Carlisle.

Firefighters from the Carlisle West station also rushed to the scene.

A spokesman said the occupants were awoken by a large bang as lightning struck the roof and travelled through the house.

Nobody was hurt and everyone was out of the property.

Firefighters spent an hour checking the house was safe.

A small number of homes in the Appleby area are also without power this morning.

Engineers are working to rectify the problem.
