I was interested in the article about the flood defences at Kendal (Gazette, July 18, 'Flood water to rise in spring')
I must admit to a feeling of dread about the future appearance of the centre of our town.
No amount of artwork can replace the beauty of mature trees, some of which I am sure are being removed for the convenience of the contractors.
I, for one, remember that we were told that the market place would be enhanced by the planting of a mature tree but this idea was soon shelved.
Trees planted anywhere will have environmental advantages but it is the aesthetic appeal they have by a river that cannot be replaced by a concrete wall, however it is decorated.
