THOUSANDS of campers have pitched up their tents and pulled on their wellies to enjoy the first day of Cumbria's biggest festival.

Festival-goers have descended on the fields of Lowther Deer Park to relish in the music of more than 100 artists at this year's Kendal Calling.

The early campers enjoyed performances from indie rock band Gomez, funk group The Cuban brothers, Sea Girls and Chai Walla, with electronic dance music duo Orbital headlining the main stage.

Nile Rodgers & Chic is set to lead the line-up tonight alongside British synth-pop band Years & Years and Miles Kane.

Leading the glow tent is DJ Glow Leftfield and DJ High Contrast with Mystery Jets and The Joy Formidable featuring on the Calling Out Stage.

Over the next four days, festival-goers will sample 11 different stages, as well as a comedy tent and plenty of on-site attractions.

Main Street Preachers will lead the line-up tomorrow with Courteeners and special guest Tom Jones headlining the main stage on Sunday.

Jax Jones and Danny Howard are also set to headline the Glow Tent.

In preparation for this year's event, police are warning festival-goers to stay safe, come prepared and keep hydrated in the warmer weather

A police spokeswoman said:“Today is the start of the festival and we hope everyone has a fun and enjoyable festival.

"Months of planning between police, festival organisers, security teams and key agencies have taken place with the safety of attendees always the priority.

"Those heading to the festival today and over the weekend are reminded to be prepared, make sure you drink plenty in the warm weather but also be prepared for the chance of rain.

"There are detection dogs on every gate and amnesty bins at every entrance."
