A North Yorkshire couple who found love while training to be teachers in the Lake District almost 30 years ago have returned to Cumbria to watch their daughter graduate.

Katie Pritchard-Jenkins, 21, has completed her BSc Outdoor Adventure and Environment degree at the University of Cumbria’s Ambleside campus and is planning to follow her parents’ example and become a teacher.

Her proud parents Adam and Gill, who trained at the same site 30 years ago when it was Charlotte Mason College, travelled to Carlisle Cathedral to watch Katie graduate alongside hundreds of other successful students.

Kayaking enthusiast Katie, from Masham, said: “I’d heard really good things from Mum and Dad about their time at Ambleside and we’ve spent a lot of our time as a family in the Lakes. I love being outside and I knew it was what I wanted to do.

“My course has been very practical, not all lectures in a classroom. I want to work with children and I know the course is good for me as I take the next step towards that. You develop all kinds of skills that can transfer into other areas.”

Her father Adam said: “It has been really great to come back and meet up with some of the lecturers who are here who we know, Heather Prince and Richard Lemmey in particular.

“Gill and I met at Ambleside on campus and so it was wonderful to see Katie go there too. We’re extremely proud of her.”

Katie is now set to embark on a one-year postgraduate teacher training course.
